In this blog post I am going to review Family Don’t Matter. This is a song off of a 14 track hip-hop album by Young Thug that was released in 2017. This is a song that i feel didn’t get enough love, probably due to thug taking a different approach. instead of just rapping, thug takes a crazy different path and fuses country and rap into one. Im going to break the song down and then explain why i feel that not only is this an amazing song, but also an important one.

Family Don’t Matter (feat. Millie Go Lightly) On this track instead of usual thug beat, it is carried by a guitar. And not an electric guitar ethier. this beat is a fusion of hip-hop and country. The starts with a sung intro by both artist followed by a YEEHAW from thug. while the hook is sung thugs humming of, UH OH OHH UH UH, goes perfectly along with the beat, so perfect it almost sounds as if it is part of the beat. the song then goes into a rap verse all while a guitar still the main instrument. The next verse starts with “country billy made a couple milly, tryna park the Rolls Royce inside the Piccadilly” Thugs genius comes out here, mixing country and hip-hop through both sound and lyrics. Thug purposefully puts Rolls Royce, a vehicle that is often used in rap lyrics, next too Piccadilly, a southern country style restaurant. During this verse thug also twist his voice, making it sound deeply southern and country like. mixing both his lyrical genius and amazing talent to twist and reform his voice. The song ends with a sung verse from millie, followed with calm adlibs from thug, repeating her words.

This song is both amazing and important because its the first of its kind. Yes there have country songs with hip-hop artist in them, like cruise by Florida Georgia Line featuring Nelly, but never before has an artist fused both the sounds and lyrics to make what you could call an entirely new sub genre. These other songs are just country with a rap verse in it or vice versa; this song however is country-trap and has been a catalyst for other artist to produce something similar. For example a recent song that has blown up and has reached number 1 on billboard called old town road is another country-trap song. Lil Nas X, the artist behind the song took the route as Thug and even shouted him out and gave him credit for pioneering country-trap.
